Considering Prescription Computer Eyeglasses

For many people, working at the computer for several hours a day can be a real pain in the neck. These health problems arise from  looking up at your computer screen, or across at multiple screens at different heights while wearing glasses or contact lenses. Often, patients compensate for poor vision by tilting their head upwards or squinting to read.

People who work on either a desktop computer or a laptop computer can experience vision related symptoms such as:
  • Neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Loss of concentration
  • Blurred vision
  • Tired or itchy, red eyes

Did you know that often the problem is their prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses?  This is even more common for wearers of bifocal, trifocal, or progressive lenses.

Unless you have a pair of prescription eyeglasses specifically for computer use, your regular prescription glasses, contacts, or over the counter readers may be the cause of your eye strain.

Why does this occur?

Distance – Computer screens are typically placed at an intermediate distance from your eyes.  This distance will force your eyes to constantly strain to focus for intermediate distance.  Your regular prescription glasses are typically made to correct your vision for near and far distances, but not necessarily for intermediate distance.

Glare - Screen time is also an increasingly important concern as more and more of our patients in the Colorado Springs, CO area have desk jobs involving computers.

Reduced Blink Rate – While you work on a computer, you mentally focus on the tasks that you are performing – sometimes with intense concentration. When this happens you subconsciously decrease the blink rate of your eyes.  This can lead to issues of dry eye, redness, and just plain uncomfortable eyes.

How to Reduce Eye Strain from Computer Screen Time

The first step to alleviate the eye problems caused by computers is to begin wearing a pair of prescription computer glasses. Most of our patients are pleasantly surprised at just how much they enjoy their computer glasses.  They are easily kept at their desk and only worn when working at their computer.

The second step is to make certain our optometrists test you for dry eye during your eye exam. There are many treatments available for dry eye. It is a very common under diagnosed condition that is often very easily treated.
We can’t promise that computer glasses will make you love your job, but sometimes they just might give you a new attitude about going into the office
While computer eyeglasses are an additional expense; most patients feel is well worth it when compared to the discomfort that is relieved once they begin wearing them.

Important items to remember about computer eyeglasses are:
  • They provide wider range of vision, so that you can more easily read across multiple screens.
  • They provide clear vision at intermediate distance.
  • Distance vision may not be in focus with computer glasses, do not wear them for driving.
  • Contact lens wearers who need glasses to read at mid-range.
  • Anti-glare coating is recommended for all prescription computer eyeglasses.

Benefits of Computer Glasses May Include:
  • Reduce Eye Strain
  • Reduce Neck and Back Strain
  • Reduce Dry Eye Symptoms
  • Increase Productivity at Work

How can I get my own pair of Computer Glasses?

The first step is to have an eye exam, or eye check-up, with one of our optometrists to determine if you need computer glasses.  If possible, it is helpful to mention that you are interested in anti glare glasses for computers when you schedule your eye exam appointment.

Once you complete your eye exam and have your prescription, you will need to visit an optical shop to fill the prescription for eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.

You will receive a prescription for computer glasses if our doctors determine they may benefit you. You can choose to visit our convenient in-office optical shop or you are also free to take your prescription elsewhere to obtain your eyeglasses.

Some patients get 2 pairs of glasses – one for the computer and one for everyday use.  Some patients wear contact lenses in combination with computer glasses.  Other patients need only to wear computer glasses.

The only way to know exactly what combination is best for you is to consult with one of our board certified optometrists.
