Dry Eye Syndrome
It's Red, It's Itchy, It's Watery!

dry eye doctor

It is estimated that over 30 million Americans have dry eye symptoms. Due to low humidity and high altitude, Dry Eye Syndrome is especially common and severe in Colorado. To better help the residents of Colorado, Vision Institute has recently been selected to perform our seventh dry eye research study. If you feel you are experiencing dry eye syndrome, some of your symptoms may be: itching, burning, scratching, watering, redness, blurred vision, foreign body sensation, and stickiness while awakening.

Our tear film has three layers. The top, oily layer functions to prevent evaporation. The middle layer is a watery layer which keeps our eyes moist and contains nutrients and germ-fighting agents. Underneath the mucous layer promotes coating and tear adhesion. If any of these layers do not function properly, then Dry Eye Syndrome can result.

Diagnosis is the first step to combat Dry Eye Syndrome, because some symptoms are confusing. A common question we hear is, “How can my eyes be dry when they are watering?” When the eye is dry, the brain signals to flood the eye to repair the deficit. Surprisingly, to treat this watering you must increase lubrication in the eyes, just as you do to treat other dry eye symptoms.

One way to increase lubrication is by placing tiny plugs in the puncta (punctal plugs). This allows our eyes to keep the tears we make on our eyes, instead of draining away through the puncta. Decreasing inflammation in our tear glands can also increase our tear production. This is achieved through moisture chamber goggles, increased fluid intake, monitoring medications for drying effect, omega-3 supplementation, and eyelid hygiene.

Dry Eye Syndrome is a problem that can be treated. You do not need to endure discomfort when you can see an eye care specialist for relief.

If you are in need of help for your dry eyes, call our eye doctors at Vision Institute in Colorado Springs.

Colorado Springs Eye Glasses

sunglass trends for 2017
As 2016 ends and 2017 is ushered in things always change with a new year and eyewear is no exception. Eye wear from prescription frames to sunglasses have evolved into a fashion lover’s dream. It is great that we live in a day and age in which eye glasses have become part of an ensemble and not just merely a utilitarian item used just for better vision. Frames have become a fashionistas best friend, often completing an entire outfit. Like shoes, many people collect an assortment of different frames just for the mood or daily ways to change “it” up.  From color to style, we will take a look at the top trends in eyewear. What is the upcoming “hot” looks in eyewear?

As people, we are always striving to look good, great, and confidant, and there is just something about the right pair of frames to set the mood. From James Dean to Marilyn Monroe, these icons were always seen sporting an iconic pair of frames and lenses that enhanced their personas tenfold.  Why? Perhaps it is the allure or the sense of mystery behind the frames. Great shades can have the effect of creating attractiveness and allure.

Large And In Charge Frames Are Sticking Around

This style of Sunglasses started in the 70’s but has been persistent in holding on to its fashion presence. Made famous by the likes of Farrah Faucet and others, a true Charlie’s Angels classic.  I am not sure what it is, but these frames are here to stay.  Frames that can handle just about any face shape are a popular choice for many, but if you have an oval shaped head than this style may be your best bet. Some classic brand names include Prada, Kate Spade, DKNY eyeglasses and many more carried by the optical shop at the Vision Institute Colorado. These frames are tough and can handle the daily tasks of the human wearing them and can be outfitted with progressive lenses, prescription lenses, scratch resistance and more.

Really, Really Dark Lenses

Carrying on with allure and mystery these darker lenses set in usually large frames will be very popular in 2017. Just don’t be the girl or guy wearing them indoors, if not for safety alone.   The nice thing about an ultra-dark pair of shades is that they can be very protective against the sun’s ultraviolet rays and allows the wearer to reduce strain on the corneas. Oh and they also make you look super cool.

Alluring Ombre Style Sunglasses Lenses

If you are not sure what these are, I know you have seen them on the faces of many fashion forward thinkers. You know, the transitioning hues of dark earth tone colors that spread from light to dark across the face of these lenses. Generally these lens types are seen on multi rimmed sunglasses, or larger frames to encapsulate the spread of color. The brands that make these popular range from Juicy, Tory Burch and Nicole Miller amongst a few. A style that is sure to stick around in the year 2017 and beyond.

80’s Sunglasses

I hate to say it, but in many ways the 80’s are making a comeback, and your eyewear choices are no exception.  These stylish lines on frames are ever more popular, and this niche is growing in the sunglasses world. Look for sharp angles and mixed colors on these frames. If retro is your mood then these frames will surprise and delight.

Marbled Dark Sunglasses Frames

Another great choice, this style of frame lays it all on the line with its young feel and sophistication. A sexy pair of sunglasses that, again has become a timeless classic. This style will probably be around for a long time.
