A comprehensive eye exam allows our eye doctors to evaluate how well you see and to look for and identify potential eye diseases before they worsen. Glaucoma and macular degeneration can result in serious vision loss if not detected and treated early. An annual eye exam helps keep your vision clear and allows our eye doctors to catch any potential eye diseases. Early treatment provides the best chance to retain your vision and keep eye diseases from causing blindness and permanent vision problems.
Comprehensive eye exams usually lasts about one hour and involves a series of tests with optical instruments to determine the current vision range and to look for any abnormalities that could signal disease. Our Colorado Springs Optometrists have education and training above and beyond most Optometrists. This additional training includes residency in ocular disease and low vision, externships at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (the #1 eye hospital in the nation), and serving seven Indian reservations through the US Public Health Service.

Eye Exams
An annual eye exam will detect any changes in your vision and also look for any abnormalities which could indicate disease. If you have less than perfect vision then a full medical optometry exam including refraction, disease detection and the formation of a detailed treatment plan will let you enjoy the benefits of vision correction. Our Colorado Springs Optometry department performs several thousand eye exams each year. Dr. Simmons, and Dr. Anderson's expert patient care approach will put kids and adults at ease throughout the course of the eye exam. Full contact lens evaluations are available for seasoned and new contact wearers alike. Eye exams from Vision Institute optometrists are designed to give you the best vision correction choices to meet your needs.
Eye Exam Procedures and Tests
Your optometrist will most likely dilate your pupils which allows him to see the optic nerve and retina at the back of your eyes. Full dilation generally occurs within 15-30 minutes and it may result in blurry vision and sensitivity to bright light for a few hours after the procedure. It is recommended that you bring sunglasses and a driver to take you home if you feel uncomfortable with your vision after dilation. If you need sunglasses just ask us and we can provide them to help offset the effects of dilation. You can expect the following test during your regular annual eye exam:
- Refraction test – determines your best corrected vision
- Visual field test – measures your peripheral sight
- Pupil testing – shows how your eyes respond to light
- Intraocular pressure test – checks for glaucoma
- Eye health assessment – assesses the health of the cornea, lens, optic nerve, & retina.
- Specialized tests – additional assessments of your eyes if necessary
